Rules/Guidelines

Inter-region Play: Inter-region playoff officials are to be paid by the home team. Inter-region play-offs and all quarterfinal games will be played on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. unless mutually agreed by the two schools involved and the UHSAA for Friday play or another time on Saturday. Games played on Fridays may be played no earlier than 2:00 p.m. In setting game days and times, schools should be sensitive to the needs of students and to the Association philosophy of scheduling so that students miss a minimum amount of classroom time. The default time for schools playing in a geographical area where a college game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon is Friday at 5:00 p.m., unless either of the teams had played in a playoff game earlier in the same week. In that case, the schools must negotiate the best solution for their teams and, in the event schools can not agree to a solution, the Saturday 1:00 p.m. default time is again enforced.

Conditioning: Conducting conditioning drills prior to the starting date of football is strongly recommended, but there can be no contact work even though helmets may be worn. All other pads are prohibited until the starting date of football.

35 Point Rule: An alternate timing rule is in eff ect for all levels (i.e., varsity, junior varsity, sophomore, freshman) of Utah high school football games when after halftime, a team’s lead exceeds 34 points. Modified rule: The clock shall be stopped as per rule 3-4-4. In effect the clock will be stopped as current NFHS rules require. However, the clock will start on the ready for play signal in all situations until the point differential reaches 21 points or less. At that point, all NFHS timing rules listed in Rule 3 will be followed. This rule will be in effect for pre-season, season and tournament games.

Video: For the state football tournaments, teams shall exchange videos for the previous game and one other game as mutually agreed by the two coaches.

Overtime Procedure: The NCAA overtime procedure will be in effect for all levels (i.e. Varsity, Junior Varsity, Sophomore, Freshman) of play.  More information regarding the overtime procedure is listed in the football section of the UHSAA website. Link to Overtime Procedure

Official Game Ball: A legal Spalding football complying with NFHS standards must be used during ALL post-season play. Officials have been asked to ensure that only Spalding footballs be used during post-season play. The UHSAA has designated the Spalding J5V Advance as the official state championship football. While supplies last, a Spalding football will be provided by the UHSAA upon request from member schools prior to the start of the post-season.
