Committees The Realignment Committee assigned the task of aligning schools within a classification into regions to the various Classification Committees. The Realignment Committee in its second draft established classification assignments for schools and a rough draft of regions but is seeking the input of individual classifications as to region alignments within those classifications. | At the November 15 meeting of the UHSAA Board of Trustees, the realignment for the years 2009-13 began. Chairperson Steve Laing met with the BOT (which comprises the alignment committee), reviewed the results of the surveys that had been returned, and set some parameters, determinants, assumptions and expectations for the process, which will be completed in June 2008. | |||
| It was determined that: | |||
| 1) Voting procedures would include a simple majority vote to pass realignment motions. The only exception would be in moving a school from the classification of its established enrollment, would require a two-thirds majority vote. 2) The UHSAA would remain in a five-classification system. 3) The soft numbers (these may change with the proposals) for classifications will be: |
| 1A: Under 150 2A: 150-399 3A: 400-999 4A: 1000-1499 5A: 1500 and above |
4) Enrollment counts furnished to the Utah State Office of Education after October 1, 2007 will be considered in the alignment process. These counts are for grades 10-12 only and do not include special education students (self-contained) or home and hospital students. 5) Extenuating circumstances will be considered, such as: |
| A) Isolated geography (travel and safety) B) School make-up C) Mobility of student body D) Projected enrollments E) Competitiveness F) Rivalries In order to assign schools with above considerations, the core-zone philosophy, used in the preceding alignment process, may be utilized. |
6) BOT members are committed to an alignment, which is good for the student (travel, time out of school, etc.), and good for the Association (region assignments). They feel an obligation to be accountable to all, and will consider issues from appropriate schools, districts and regions. The Board realizes, of course, that not all will be totally satisfied. 7) The timeline for the alignment is as follows: |
| Nov. 15 First meeting Dec.-Jan. 11 Suggestions from constituents Jan. 24 BOT meeting- first draft March Hearings from schools, districts, etc. March 27 BOT meeting- second draft Apr. or May Hearings from schools, districts, etc. June 10 BOT meeting- final alignment announced |
| 8) The alignment will be for a four-year (2009-13) period (a motion to consider realignment every two years was defeated). There will be no consideration for mid-alignment adjustments, unless catastrophic changes in enrollment occur and/or new member schools emerge. | |||
| The UHSAA will post progress of the re-alignment process here on this page of the UHSAA web-site | |||
