1. All sanctioned “team” competitions must use the following UHSAA certified officials: competition director, five routines judges, three technical judges and a tabulator.

2. The annual maximum budget for a drill team is $1,000 per girl for any costs incurred for state competition routines from the competition start date through the state competition.

3. Invitational Competition Directors hire their own judges.

4. Judges for the Region Competitions are assigned by the UHSAA State Arbiter.

5. From the Region Competition to the State Competition choreography changes cannot exceed 16 counts.

6. Along with this Online Rules Clinic, both Technical & Routine Judges are required to attend one of the three practicums offered this year, AND pass a test to be considered a UHSAA Certified Drill Team Judge.

7. All penalties are worth 2 pts/routine judge, except Sportsmanship which is worth 5 pts/routine judge.

8. There are three main sections of the NFHS Spirit Rules Book that are labeled “Rules”, with which all coaches and technical judges need to be extremely familiar.

9. Of the six new NFHS Rules, 5 of them may directly affect drill teams

10. Dance Paws are now considered appropriate footwear for dance, drill, and pom teams

11. Drill teams can still perform headstands to handstands with assistance, under the new assisted inverted floor stunt rule.


12. According to the NFHS Points of Emphasis, coaches have the responsibility of exhibiting professionalism, know & understand the NFHS Spirit Rules Book, display & teach good sportsmanship, and minimize risk to their team members.


13. A participant must not move under or over a partner stunt or pyramid once the stunt is established. (Underlined addition added after getting clarification from the NFHS rep, Diane Woolf)


14. Technical judges are not allowed to help teams ahead of the competition season in determining whether a skill/stunt is legal or illegal.


15. The only change on the new routine judging score sheets are the words listed. All categories & point values are still the same.
