Statement from Referee Terrence Ellis
To whom it may concern,
The coach for West Ridge Academy was out of control from the very start of the game. In the first 15 seconds he was yelling at his players and in the first minute he was yelling at my partner and I about the other team playing dirty. We told him we hadn’t seen any dirty play and would look for it.In the 2nd quarter he continued to complain about the other team stating they were tripping and kicking his players. Again my partner and I discussed this and neither of us saw anything that could be construed as dirty.
The head coach’s unprofessionalism rubbed off on his assistant who started to bark at my partner about the same issues and my partner issued the assistant a technical. The head coach got even more upset and per my partner he stated that neither of us are qualified to ref this level of basketball. At this point my partner told the coach we were done talking. The third quarter was fairly quiet until about one minute left in the third. His team was on a fast break and his player was fouled. I signaled the foul but before I could report it the coach was on the court screaming that this was bull crap and someone was going to get hurt. I told the coach that I had the foul and he stated he didn’t care and that this was all bull crap. I told the coach that was enough and he said no it isn’t its bull crap. (This entire dialogue is at a yell from the coach)
At this point I issued the first technical to the head coach. I reported it to the table and I walked away to the other side of the court. My partner then started to give instructions to the school for the deaf & blind as to what was going to happen; (Todd is proficient in signing). At this point the head coach starts yelling at him and telling him that this was all bullcrap. Todd told the coach to please calm down because he didn’t want to eject him. The coach said he didn’t care and continued his tirade. At this point Todd issued the 2nd technical and I told the coach he had to leave the court. At first he refused to leave and after several requests I told him if he didn’t leave he would forfeit the game. The coach then left the confines of the court and we were able to finish the game.
Statement from Umpire Todd Thurston,
First quarter West Ridge coach was upset about dirty play and we discussed it. He continued barking at me so I said coach we are done and gave him an official warning. His assistance started barking and I asked him to please sit Down and he continued to bark about some trip. I have him a T. This settled down things until the end of the third. Coach from West Ridge was given a T by Terrence. The coach was very upset I tried to settle him down by stating we want
To keep him in the game. He started screaming at us that this was bull crap several times and I ejected him with a second T.

At 3:46 pm, at the end of the previous game in the tournament, my partner and I were exiting the field and were asked by the Head Coach of the team now taking the field what time we planned on starting the next game that was scheduled for 4 pm. My partner told him that we planned on returning to the field right away and beginning the next game so that we could keep the tournament moving along. We didnt feel that this was too much to ask. Both teams had already been at the site of the game for about an hour. At 3:56 pm we returned to the field and I asked that for each Head Coach to join us at the plate meeting. Green River's head coach joined us and provided his lineup card. As I was going through his lineup the Head Coach from West Ridge Academy started to voice his concerns that we had not given his team the proper amount of time to warm up. I let him know that we would not start the game until 4 PM. 4 PM was the scheduled start time. He then let me know he had been promised 15 minutes to warm his team up after the last game had ended. I informed him that he would be given that amount of time seeing the the other game had ended at 3:46 pm. He was not happy with my explanation and proceeded to let his opinion of me become public and told me that I was a joke of an official. He was then ejected from the ball game and refused to give his assistant Coach the lineup to finish the plate meeting. He continued to argue while refusing to leave the field. At 4:02 he then exited the dugout and approached the home plate area that My partner, I and the Head Coach from Green River were standing. He then told me that he was going to write a report and make a phone call to a buddy of his and use some pull to make sure that I would never umpire again. He argued for a few more minutes and was again encouraged to leave the field so we could beging the ball game. At 4:06 pm he returned from making a phone call to tell me that he had contacted an administrator to come remove me from the field and they would play the game without me. I informed him that I would not begin the ballgame with him still at the field. He then let me know that he was taking his team home. At this moment I declared the ball game over and left the field. |

In the first half, my partner gave the coach an administrative warning for poor conduct. Moments later had to issue a technical foul. The coach told him that there is a reason that we were officiating the game and we were not good enough for that level. He then repeated that to me when I stepped in to remove my partner from the situation. At half time, I told my partner that we would make sure and keep rotating in order to keep him away from the coach. At the end of the 3rd quarter I noticed my partner was in the end of that team and went and forced the rotation, the band started playing so we were unable to hear exactly what the coach was yelling at my partner. Just under 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter, WRA player drove to the hoop and was blocked and the ball was given back to WRA under the basket. I switched sides and was in front of the coach, raised my hand for the inbound when the coach told me to check my wallet. I turned around and gave him his 2nd T and told him he needed to leave. He thanked me and told me it was about time. He then yelled to my partner to check his wallet because he had been cheating his kids all night. He then told me he was not leaving the floor and stood on the floor and stared at my partner. I could not see the administrator who was around the corner and I asked the Sheriff Deputy to please escort him from the floor. The coach then told the deputy that he would have to slap the cuffs on him to get him to leave. The deputy then placed his hand on his back and said, sir lets please go. The coach yelled don't touch me and then the 2 deputies and administrator escorted him out and stood by him in the tunnel through the remainder of the game. The coach refused to leave the confines of the arena. He stood where he could continue to stare at us every time we were at his end of the floor. When I first noticed this, I informed my partner that we would be exiting the floor at the opposite end of normal exiting. |
