Coaches,

There continues to be a uniform question involving compression shorts used as the primary bottom - This rule WILL BE ENFORCED. It is an NFHS rule, I have consulted with the NFHS Track & Field rules committee members as well as Roger Buhrley who has served as the chair of that committee. There is no wiggle room here – please understand the officials are doing what has been directed to them by the NFHS.

Rule interpretation question:  Are the uniform shorts in violation if they have a manufacture’s name or logo in more than one place on the shorts.  Some teams use compression shorts that have the manufacture’s name around the waistband and then a logo on the leg.  Are they in violation or not?

The logo rule 4-3-1-c-5 (page 23) would not permit the waistband logo as it exceeds 2¼ inches.  It would also be a violation if there is another logo on the uniform bottom. As the rule states, “A single manufacturer’s logo…”  So those shorts with the manufacturer’s name or logo around the waistband and in another location on the same short would be illegal as the required track bottom.  However, as an undergarment that does not extend below the knees they would not be subject to the logo requirements (Rule 4-3-1-c-7).

The short described would be illegal as a uniform bottom, but legal as an undergarment provided it did not extend below the knee.

We have attached pictures of the shorts that would be ILLEGAL as the primary short.
